Jonatan Secures French Open Title with Comeback Victory

After a straight-game loss to Chou Tien-chen in the first round of the Denmark Open the previous week, Jonatan battled through the French Open draw to reach the final. Facing Li Shifeng, against whom he had never lost in three prior meetings, Jonatan staged a comeback after an 80-minute thriller to claim victory.

In the French Open men’s singles final, Jonatan overturned the match with scores of 16-21, 21-15, 21-14 against Li Shifeng, the Hangzhou Asian Games gold medalist, capturing his third title of the season. This victory extended his winning streak over Li to four matches and marked his first BWF Super 750 championship.

Having previously reached the French Open final in 2019 but losing to Chen Long for the runner-up position, Jonatan finally redeemed himself after four years. He joyfully expressed, ‘This is a very significant win for me. I want to thank my coaches, friends, and everyone who has supported me—this championship is for you.’

Jonatan highlighted his recent focus on building confidence in training, noting that increased self-belief allows him to play more aggressively and execute strategies effectively on court. Regarding his opponent Li Shifeng, he remarked, ‘As the new Chinese top player, he has shown great confidence since winning the Hangzhou Asian Games gold. Matches against him are always challenging.’
